Our children are tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and problem solvers. It is up to us to help them develop the skills and love of learning that will help them accomplish amazing things! Hello! My name is Amy Schaum. I have just arrived in California and am thrilled to be joining the staff at Manzanita!
Committed to public service, I originally planned to enter the U.S. Air Force after completing a B.A. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!) in 1997. However, due to a knee injury I had to find a new calling. During my time in Chapel Hill, I met my wonderful husband of almost 14 years, Paul. He currently serves in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed at Vandenberg AFB, which is what brought me here. We have four children: Emily, Jacob, & Aaron, age 10 (yes, they are triplets!) and Ryan, age 4 ˝. We have lived in many different places and traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad.
Looking for a new way to serve, I decided to pursue a career in education. As a person who loves books and learning, I knew it would be a perfect fit! I pursued a Masters and Teacher Credentialing program with the University of Phoenix, graduating with a M.A. in Education in 2006. Since then, I have taught a very diverse group of students, including English Language Learners, gifted students, and other exceptional students in fifth and third grades.
Sixth grade is a time of great transition and growth for students. Students need to develop independence and stamina to be successful throughout their educational career. Ensuring that I nurture the love of learning that I am sure students are developing is a way to give students the greatest opportunity for lifelong success. I can’t wait to meet you all and get the new school year started!
