Dear
Parents,
Once
again, it is the time of year we close in on the
California Content Standards Test (CST).
Although this is a serious time for our
scholars, April’s Book of the Month -Testing
Miss Malarkey, written by Judy Finchler, is
intended to ease test anxiety, reduce tension,
and give everyone permission to smile in the
face of a standardized-testing culture that can
make us all a little wacky at times!

Apreciables Padres,
Otra vez, es el tiempo y nos
acercamos al Examen Estándar de California
(CST). ¡Aunque este es un tiempo serio para
nuestros alumnos, el libro del mes de abril Examen Señorita Malarkey, escrito por Judy
Finchler, tiene la intención de reducir el
ansiedad, la tensión y darle a cada uno la
libertad de reír frente a la cultura del examen
estandarizado que puede enfadar algunas veces! |

As
the testing date approaches, Principal Wiggins
looks like he is not getting enough sleep, is
worried about the right kind of pencils to
order, and demands that the skill of field
bubbling be taught in art class. Classroom
teacher Miss Malarkey becomes increasingly
frazzled. She tries to reassure her students
that "THE TEST" is not important however the
atmosphere tells a different story. Children
play Multiplication Mambo at recess, eat brain
food in the cafeteria, and learn to meditate in
gym. An atmosphere of panic and tension spreads
to the parents who abandon bedtime stories for
textbook drills and attend PTA meetings with Dr.
Scores, "the Svengali” of test taking. |

Acercándose el día de los exámenes, el Director
Wiggins parece no dormir lo suficiente, está
preocupado que lápices ordenar y pide que se
enseñe como llenar círculos en la clase de arte.
La maestra Miss Malarkey está muy cansada. Ella
trata de asegurar a sus alumnos que “EL EXAMEN”
no es muy importante pero ellos notan lo
contrario. Los niños juegan Mambo de
Multiplicación en el recreo, comen comida para
el cerebro, en la cafetería y aprenden a meditar
en el gimnasio. Un ambiente de pánico y tensión
se extiende a los padres que abandonan la
lectura antes de dormir por libros de práctica y
van a reuniones del PTA con el Dr. Scores, “el
Controlador” de los que toman el examen. |

I
have every confidence the Manzanita teaching
staff have prepared your scholar(s) for “THE
TEST”. They have not narrowed the scope of their
instruction to merely mimic “The Test”. Our
scholars have developed the critical thinking
skills needed to fortify them as readers,
writers, and mathematicians. Watch for our
theme- “Manzanita Scholars Tame the Test - Roar
and Score!”
In
April we ask you to consider your continuing
commitment to Manzanita by submitting an “Intent
to Continue” form on behalf of your scholar(s).
As parents you have helped us develop a culture
which is not based solely on “THE TEST” but on
the strength of our instructional design. You
have helped us share the story of Manzanita. A
story that is not based solely on test results,
but on learning that sustains a diverse and
distinctive educational culture. |

Estoy confiada que los maestros de Manzanita han
preparado a su hijo/a para “EL EXAMEN”. Ellos no
han limitado su meta de educación a imitar
solamente “el Examen”. Nuestros alumnos han
desarrollado el pensamiento crítico, habilidad
que necesitan para fortificarse como lectores,
escritores y matemáticos. ¡Vea en nuestro tema-
“Alumnos de Manzanita Doman el Examen – Rugen y
Califican!
En abril les pedimos considere continuar con su
compromiso con Manzanita entregando una forma de
“Intento de Continuar” de su hijo/a. Como padres
ustedes nos han ayudado a compartir la historia
de Manzanita. Una historia no solo basada en los
resultados del examen, pero en aprendizaje que
sostiene una cultura distinta y diversa. |
