Each and every day scholars at Manzanita expand their intellect through unique learning opportunities. As summer approaches it is time for them to prepare for a well deserved retreat from the classroom - but not from learning. Summer is a time to explore nature and renew interest in the world around us. It is a time to ponder, reflect, and consider Mother Earth.

Apreciables Padres,
Cada uno y cada día alumnos de Manzanita expanden su intelecto con la única oportunidad de aprender. El verano se acerca, es tiempo para prepararse para un tiempo fuera del salón – pero no del aprendizaje. El verano es tiempo para explorar la naturaleza y renovar el interés en el mundo que nos rodea. Es tiempo de pensar, reflexionar y considerar a la Madre Tierra.

The Sea, the Storm, and
the Mangrove Tangle
authored and illustrated by Lynne Cherry was my
April 2010 selection for Principal’s Book of the
Month. Ms. Cherry’s book,
The Great Kapok Tree
is this month’s Book of the Month. Once again,
Cherry pleads with us to become friends of
Mother Earth and reminds us of the importance in
maintaining balance in our environment.
In this
narrative tale set in the Amazon rainforest, a
great kapok tree comes dangerously close to
being chopped down by a young man. The ax is
heavy and the task arduous. Fatigued by the
humidity he stops to rest and soon drifts into a
rainforest slumber. One by one, |

escrito e ilustrado por Lynne Cherry fue mi selección de abril del 2011 para el Libro del Mes de la directora. El libro de la Sra. Cherry,
El Gran Arbol Kapok es la selección de este mes para el libro de la directora. Una vez más, Cherry nos ruega que nos hagamos amigos de la Madre Tierra y nos recuerda la importancia de mantener el balance en nuestro medio ambiente.
En este cuento de la Selva Amazónica, el gran árbol kapok esta peligrosamente cerca de ser cortado por un hombre joven. El hacha es pesada y el trabajo es duro. Cansado por la humedad él se para a descansar se sumerge en un sueño. |

snakes, porcupines, anteaters, toucans, sloths, and even a small child from the Yanomamo tribe emerge from the jungle canopy. They approach the slumbering young ax-man and whisper in his ear. They plead with him to spare their tree. They provide an accurate and persuasive scientific argument for preserving their habitat and its ecological importance. When he awakens he is startled by the rare and marvelous creatures surrounding him, he picks up the ax as if to resume his task. However the young man stops to ponder, reflect, drops his ax and walks away.
Together as friends of the Earth, we can make a difference, too. We must listen, ponder, reflect, and reconsider!
This month we have many exciting events. We look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday, August 24, 2011. We recognize that it is our scholar’s and families we serve who give meaning and value to the Manzanita learning environment. |

Uno por uno, víboras, puercos espines, osos hormigueros, tucanes, perezosos y hasta un niño de la tribu Yanomamo sale de la jungla. Se acercan al joven talador y le dicen al oído. Le ruega que deje su árbol. Le presentan un argumento exacto y persuasivo para preservar su hábitat y su importancia ecológica.
Cuando el despertó se sorprende por las raras y maravillosas creaturas que lo rodean, levanta el hacha como si fuera a continuar talando el árbol. Pero el joven se detiene a pensar reflexiona, deja caer su hacha y se aleja.
¡Juntos como amigos de la tierra, podemos hacer la diferencia, también. Debemos oir, pensar, reflexionar y reconsiderar!
Este mes tenemos muchos eventos. Esperamos verle otra vez el miércoles 24 de agosto del 2011. Reconocemos que son nuestros alumnos y familias a las que servimos quienes dan sentido y valor al ambiente de aprendizaje en Manzanita. |
