Important School Health Policies

Sick Policy:
The Board of Education requires that students be present every day. Occasionally though a student may need to be absent from school due to illness, etc. If your child is going to be out of school please call the school to report them absent. A child returning to school should bring in a note from their parent of guardian. If your child has seen the doctor of dentist, please get a note from their office. If your child has been ill and running a fever, we ask that they be fever free for 24 hours before they return to school. We don't want your child to get worse and we don't want other students in the class to get sick.

Medication:
In accordance to state law and district policy, children are not allowed to take any medication, prescription or non-prescription without a doctor's order. If a child does need to take medication in school I will need a doctor's order, the parent’s permission to medicate, and the medication in the original container labeled by the pharmacy. A medication order from a doctor is effective for the school year. A new order is necessary for each new school year. Students found to have prescription or non-prescription medicine in their possession will have the medicine taken from them and their parents will be contacted.

Information and Reminders for Parents:

Report of Health Examination for School Entry

To protect the health of children, California law requires a health examination on school entry. Please have this report filled out by a health examiner and return it to the school.  The school will keep and maintain it as confidential information.

Oral Health Assessment Form
California law (Education Code Section 49452.8) states your child must have a dental check-up by May 31 of his/her first year in public school. A California licensed dental professional operating within his scope of practice must perform the check-up and fill out Section 2 of this form. If your child had a dental check-up in the 12 months before he/she started school, ask your dentist to fill out Section 2. If you are unable to get a dental check-up for your child, fill out Section 3.

Hearing & Vision Screenings
Hearing and vision screenings are done for all Kinder, 2nd, and 5th grade, and all new students. All of these screenings are done for each class starting at the end of August and are usually completed by April. If you suspect that your child is having a hearing or vision difficulty, please let me know and I will test them prior to their class turn. If any abnormality is found during any of these screenings a note will be sent home or a phone call to the parents will be made. No notice is sent home if the screening is normal.

Head Lice Policy

Unfortunately many children will have at least one case of lice detected in the classroom before the year is over. We at the Manzanita Public Charter School want to help keep your child and our classrooms free of head lice. The School has adopted a NO LICE, NO NIT policy. This means that any child that has either lice or nits will not be allowed to attend school. Most cases can be treated, all nits removed, and scholars able to attend school the next day. Your child, accompanied by a parent or guardian, should return to the school main office the following school day for a “head check”. Failure to return your child nit free will result in your child being sent back home. You may call me @ (805) 734-5600 for further directions in treatment or with any questions.
